THIS MONTH’S

TOP STORIES

Floatation Therapy

How it truly felt to be floating for 60mins.

Floating, a practice where you step into a float pod or tank, filled with over 550kgs of Epsom salts dissolved into 30cm of clean filtered water. The water and room are warmed to the temperature of your skin, so that when you settle into your float, the sensations of the water against your skin begin to dissolve and you lose track of where your body ends and the water begins. As gravity melts away and your senses fade (the room is so black you cannot see a thing, and all you can hear is your own breath and the music beautifully in the background) you begin to let go more and more. What results is a unique experience of total weightlessness, complete calm and the deepest rest.

So now you’ve heard that…are you keen!? Floating is something Meg & I have been meaning to try since discovering meditation during our Yoga Teacher Training a few years ago. It’s taken us a while….but since we’ve both had a rather hectic 6 months, we thought why not now!

Taking the plunge with someone you know quite well is a great way to ease into it. Having said that, I too cannot wait to give it a go on my own and see how different the experience is.

Arriving to the float centre, we were greeted with super friendly staff. Everyone asking if this was our first float. It was. They all seemed genuinely excited for us to have this experience. We were also excited. We had heard brilliant things. An excellent place to meditate…and what really had this sleep deprived mumma excited was the idea of a 60min float rejuvenating the body and mind like a 4 hour sleep. YES PLEASE!

Stepping into our little room (we had our bathers on), we took a shower and got acquainted with the epsom salt bath. Laying our tired bodies in the warm bath. Turning off the lights and suddenly plunged into darkness…listening only to our breath and the gentle music flowing through the speakers. Divine. Of course it’s challenging for anyone to truly meditate for 60mins….I’m sure initially my mind was racing, but by the end of session we both walked out as if on a cloud.

As all forces of gravity on your musculoskeletal and nervous system are removed by the buoyancy of the water, and all sensory input had been eliminated, your whole mind and body can restore and realign.

There are so many wonderful benefits to giving a float a go for yourself….as the pressure of the world has literally been taken off your body due to the absence of gravity, you experience total weightlessness. Your whole body (neck, spine, hips and knees) are all relieved of any tension and pain- allowing for an opportunity for the body to decompress, release and realign. Also, floating in a huge bath full of Epsom salts for 60mins means your body absorbs an abundance of vital minerals, like magnesium and sulphate in via the skin. Improving the effects of high blood pressure, heart disorders, chronic fatigue, migraines, sleep disorders and joint and muscles aches and pains.

This was such a magical experience, and one that we will no doubt be doing again. Give it a go and let us know what you think!!

**We had our first float at CityCave in Paddington. (This is not sponsored…but the staff were lovely and the space there felt like a little oasis.)

Something a little extra….

Plastic Free July!

We know that the ban on single use plastic bags at major supermarkets in Australia has got everyone talking about reducing their plastic waste…and there really is no better time than now to say no to single use plastic! The challenge of ‘choose to refuse’ single use plastics during the month of July has really taken shape over the past few years, particularly through the Plastic Free July movement.

It might sound really hard to quit all your single use plastic, but it’s just the little everyday swaps that really do make all the difference. Imagine a world without waste. That is our future and it’s up to us to make it happen!

In order to give up single use plastics, you might just need to be a little more organised…but it’s a small price to pay to keep the world beautiful for our children and grandchildren.

We have put together some super simple tips to help you make the most of a more sustainable way of life!

  • Take a reusable cup with you when you are going out for a takeaway coffee (there are SO SO MANY gorgeous reusable cups available now – Keepcup & Joco are two of our faves!).
  • Take your own bags to the grocery store (keep them in your car or by the front door so that you don’t forget!!)
  • On that note – make sure you take some reusable produce bags with you to the supermarket too! This way you can bundle your apples together without the need of a plastic bag! Win!
  • Say no to straws – Every. Single. Time. We seriously don’t need them to drink and they are so bad for the environment!
  • Stop using Glad Wrap. It’s literally the definition of single use plastic. Some fantastic alternatives are to store food in glass containers or use beeswax wraps instead of plastic wrap. Beeswax wraps are seriously incredible…if you haven’t tried them already, you need to ASAP! Keeps food so much fresher – I’ve had a sliced avocado last a week in a beeswax wrap! Miracle!
  • When you’re out, be really conscious of any single use plastic that you might encounter and try to avoid it. Why do you need to by the tomatoes that are wrapped in plastic…buy the loose tomatoes! Simple!

There really is so much that you can do to avoid and reduce your use of single use plastics, and this July we challenge you to see if you can go Plastic Free!

Check out the website (http://www.plasticfreejuly.org/) or even have a look at Biome (https://www.biome.com.au/911-plastic-free-life) for some fantastic plastic free alternatives for your day-today life!

As they say, be the change you wish to see in the world! 🙂
